Next election

By-elections for Woking Borough Council ward of Hoe Valley and Surrey County Council division of Woking South

The by-elections will take place on Thursday 10 July 2025 following the resignation of Cllr Will Forster from his county and borough seats. He remains MP for Woking.

A by-election is usually held to fill a ‘casual vacancy’ which occurs on either the death or resignation of a councillor. An election would not be held if that councillor was due to retire within 6 months.

Woking Borough Council elections

Borough elections are held in all 10 electoral wards every 3 out of 4 years. The elections usually take place on the first Thursday in May. 

The next borough election will take place on Thursday 7 May 2026.

Surrey County Council elections

County elections to Surrey County Council are held every 4th year. 

There are 7 county councillors for Woking. Each county councillor is elected for a 4 year term.

May 2025 county election delayed

On 5 February 2025, the Deputy Prime Minister and Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, The Rt. Hon. Angela Rayner MP announced in Parliament that elections to Surrey County Council will be delayed for 1 year. 

The next Surrey County Council election will take place on Thursday 7 May 2026.

The delayed May 2025 election allows the detailed work for devolution and local government reorganisation to take place.

Surrey Police and Crime Commissioner elections

Woking is part of the Surrey Police area, which is formed with all 11 districts and boroughs in Surrey. 

Police and Crime Commissioners (PCC) are elected every 4 years. The next PCC election will take place in May 2028.

The Police and Crime Commissioner is responsible for setting the strategic objectives for policing in Surrey.

Parliamentary elections (general elections)

The maximum term of a Parliament is 5 years from the day on which it first met. The last general election took place on Thursday 4 July 2024. 

The next general election is expected in 2029, unless the Prime Minister asks for an earlier date.

The Woking Parliamentary County Constituency is formed only of Woking area.
