How we protect trees, Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs), search the TPO map, apply for tree works on a TPO.
A Tree Preservation Order (TPO) is an order made by a local planning authority to protect specific trees, groups of trees, woodlands and areas and is done in the interest of the wider community. An area TPO only protects the trees present at the time the order was served.
We are aware that the interactive map for checking Tree Preservation Orders is not working. We are currently investigating and will update this message when the issue has been resolved. Before felling or pruning a tree, check with us first.
When a TPO is issued, residents with land next to the protected trees are informed. The TPO is then put in place temporarily for 6 months.
A consultation period then starts. It takes place during the order’s first 28 days. It allows people or groups to submit official comments.
All valid written submissions received within the 28 days will be considered before confirming the TPO.
Once confirmed, the TPO is made permanent.
You can submit a request to protect a tree:
Email: tree.preservation@woking.gov.uk
You must include:
Conservation areas are geographical area of special architectural or historic interest which require protection to preserve their character or appearance. Trees make an important contribution to the appearance of conservation areas and so are given special protection.
You need permission to prune or fell a tree within a conservation area. This applies to trees with a stem diameter of equal to or greater than 7.5 centimetres as measured at 1.5 metres above ground level.
To apply to work on a tree in a conservation area, you must give at least 6 weeks notice.
We will then either grant permission or place a TPO on the tree.

When planning permission is granted, we may require existing trees to be kept as a condition of the development. This applies even if they are not protected by a TPO or in a conservation area.
If a tree is located in the grounds of a property that was built or extended within the last 5 years, it may be protected by planning conditions.
Works conducted on trees protected by a TPO or within a conservation area without our consent is an offence and you may be fined.
