How to apply for a personal licence

How to apply for a personal licence to sell alcohol in a business that has a premises licence or a club premises certificate.

We aim to process your application within 21 days of receiving it. 

Submit a disclosure of convictions declaration

As well as an application form, you also need to tell us about about any convictions.

Submit passport photos

You must also submit 2 identical passport photos, along with a statement verifying the likeness of yourself to the photograph. 

The statement can be provided by:

  • a solicitor
  • a person of standing in the community
  • anyone with a professional qualification

Submit an accredited licensing qualification certificate

Before you apply you must hold an alcohol licensing qualification certificate. Please submit a copy of your certificate with your application. Go to accredited qualification providers: personal licence to sell alcohol – GOV.UK.

Submit a Disclosure and Barring Service Certificate (DBS)

Before you apply you must have a current DBS certificate. Please submit a copy of your certificate with your application.

Submit evidence of your right to work in the UK

You also need to submit evidence of your right to work in the UK. 

For most people this will be a photocopy of your UK passport. However, if you do not have a passport, there is a selection of other documents that will be accepted.

Pay the personal licence application fee

Before you submit your application, please pay the personal licence fee of £37.

Licence renewals

You do not need to renew your personal licence. 

It remains valid unless it is:

  • surrendered
  • suspended
  • revoked
  • declared forfeit by a court
