You are required by law to give a copy of your application to all responsible authorities in the area in which the premises is situated. You also need to give them copies of all of your supporting evidence. You must do this on the same day you submit your application.
We aim to decide on an application within 2 months of receiving a completed application, including payment.
Advertising your application
You are required by law to advertise your application on a poster and in a local newspaper.
Go to advertising a Licensing Act 2003 application.
Application representations (objections)
Anyone can submit a representation (objection) to an application. You have 28 days, from the day the application is advertised.
Objections must relate to any of the 4 licensing objectives.
If there is an objection, a hearing of the Licensing Committee (which consists of 10 elected local authority members) will be held within 20 days. This unless all parties agree that a formal hearing is unnecessary.
A person cannot make objections anonymously. This is because, for example, we need to be satisfied that the person making the objection is not being vexatious. It is also important that an applicant can respond to an objection.
If an application is refused
You can appeal to a magistrates' court against our decision to refuse a licence, within 21 days of being notified of our decision and the grounds for it.
