Before you apply for a pavement licence

What you need to know before you apply, including eligible businesses and the types of outdoor furniture that you can use.

Businesses that can apply for a pavement licence include:

  • pubs
  • cafes
  • bars
  • restaurants
  • snack bars
  • coffee shops
  • ice cream parlours
  • those that have food or drink services as part of the business, such as supermarkets and entertainment venues

Outdoor street furniture

Outdoor furniture that is allowed includes:

  • counters or stalls for selling or serving food or drink
  • tables, counters or shelves on which food or drink can be placed
  • chairs, benches, or other seating
  • umbrellas, barriers, heaters and other equipment used for outdoor consumption of food or drink

Serving alcohol and food

A pavement licence does not allow you to sell alcohol. To check which licences you may need, go to alcohol, entertainment and late night refreshment licences.
