Building regulations approvals for shops and other commercial properties

Building works in shops and commercial properties and what may need building regulations approval.

If you are undertaking building works in a shop or a commercial property, you generally will need to apply for building regulations approval.

Installing, altering or repairing a shop front

You need approval.

Take care that you do not make the accessibility of your shop less suitable for disabled people.

Making internal alterations to a shop, office or other workplace

You need approval.

We will also consult with Surrey Fire Authority.

Converting a house, shops or office into flats

You need approval.

This applies even when internal alterations and/or extensions may not be intended. This is a ‘material change of use’ as defined in the building regulations.
