How to renew a taxi or private hire vehicle licence

Renewals, including when to renew and evidence to submit.

A vehicle licence is valid for 12 months. You must renew it before it expires.

Make sure you send us your renewal application at least 10 working days before the licence expiry date. We need time to process it and carry out the relevant checks.

Any renewal applications received after the date of expiry will be processed as a new vehicle application.

Vehicle inspections

When you renew your vehicle licence, you will have to present the vehicle inspection certificate that you received from your most recent 6-monthly inspection, plus a current valid inspection.

Failure to present these inspection certificates may delay your renewal and mean that you have to pay higher charges.

If your licence has already expired

Once a licence has expired, you’re not permitted to use your vehicle for private hire work until the:

  • new licence and plates are in your possession
  • plates displayed on the vehicle comply with the licence conditions
