Vehicle inspections for taxis and private hire vehicles

The requirements for vehicle inspections for taxi and private hire licence applications and renewals.

All taxis (hackney carriages) and private hire vehicles must pass an inspection carried out by an authorised mechanic before a vehicle can be licensed. 

When to get your vehicle inspected

If a vehicle is more than 3-years old when first licensed or renewed, it will require 2 vehicle inspections a year:

  • once as part of the licensing process
  • once again 6 months later

When you renew your vehicle licence, you will have to present the inspection certificate that you received from your most recent 6-monthly inspection plus a current valid inspection. 

If you do not present these inspection certificates, it may delay your renewal and you may have to pay further charges.
